The Badlands Wilderness Study Area, which includes 10,000 acres in southwest Crook County, is on its way to becoming a federally-protected wilderness. The Act to protect it was recently passed through the U.S. Senate and is now in the House. The goal is to continue to protect this desert ecosystem from mining and geothermal leasing, as well as off-road vehicles. The BLM, which currently manages the Badlands, has already implemented restrictions so there will not be a large change in land use if the federal Act passes, but it will provide more stable, long-term protection.
New Sewer Plan Could Mean Lower Fees
The City of Prineville is currently applying for grant money from the Economic Development Administration to fund sewer plant upgrades. Officials are considering building a wetland project next to existing lagoons, which would provide a long-term fix for sewer infrastructure and cost considerably less than a mechanical plant that is currently included in the Wastewater Master Plan. If this project is approved, Sewer SDCs for Prineville could be reduced considerably. That's good for everyone! Learn More>>
