Prineville Ranked in Twenty Top Places to Live the West

Popular magazine American Cowboy has ranked Prineville among the best places to live and play for active Western lifestyle enthusiasts. What does that mean? It means Prineville epitomizes a Western community: authentic cowboy culture and charm, a healthy respect for history and heritage, abundant recreational, leisure, and outdoor activities, and a strong sense of community coupled with a freespirited, rugged independence. According to Bill Garrels, publisher of the magazine, American Cowboy chose places that "embody the magic and spirit that is the great American West." Each town was also judged for its commitment to honoring, celebrating, and preserving its Western history and heritage. Want to read more? Crook County Schools: Ranking High

Oregon schools, including those in Crook County, rank 15th in the nation according to a recent national report by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). That's great news for Oregon families - and the even better news for Crook County families is that our per-student spending is on the high side. Here, expenditures per pupil exceed Oregon's overall average by about $700 per student and teachers receive a higher-than-average wage. This extra money has a positive impact on education - more money means cash to purchase supplies and other items that will help kids learn, as well as securing great staff. Last year, Crook County teacher received the nation's highest honor when he was chosen as National Teacher of the Year. Geisen was the first Oregon teacher to receive this honor in 35 years.
